Illinois Registered Interpreters - Certificates/Certificate Levels

What do some of these Certificates means?  What do these levels mean? Here are some recognized certificates here in Illinois.

Definition of the certificate

What they can do or cannot do?

L-I

 Novice I: person who is a beginner

 NOT an interpreter

L-II

 Novice II: person who is a beginner with little more skill than Level I

 NOT an interpreter

L-III

 Generalist

Above average voice-to-sign skills, and good sign-to-voice skills, & demonstrates the interpreting skills necessary for some situations

L-IV

 Advanced

Excellent voice-to-sign skills and above average sign-to-voice skills, & demonstrates the interpreting skill necessary for most situations.

L-V

Master

Superior (very high) voice-to-sign skills and excellent sign-to-voice skills, & demonstrates the interpreting

Skill necessary for just about all situations.

Certificate is good for only 5 years.
